As the dust settles on the vote just two weeks before, Naughtie will use his decades of experience reporting on American politics to unpack what the results mean for a deeply divided nation – from shifting power dynamics in Washington to the broader cultural and social currents shaping everyday life.

James Naughtie is one of the country’s best-known broadcasters. A special correspondent for BBC News, he presented Today on Radio 4 for 21 years and has written and presented a host of documentaries for radio and television. He has hosted Bookclub on Radio 4 since it began in 1998, and written and broadcast on literature and music for many years. As an author he has written books on politics and music, three espionage novels and an account of half a century of travels in the United States , ‘On the Road -= American Adventures from Nixon to Trump’. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh

This talk tells an Oxford story, from the discovery and development of penicillin to the modern clinical evaluation of treatments for COVID-19 and other common viral infections. It explores how one of medicine’s great miracles also led to one of its great mistakes: the overuse of antimicrobials and the rise of resistance. Drawing on recent Oxford-led community-based clinical trials, Chris will argue that we must not repeat the same error with the new treatments for viral infections now coming to market at pace. Rapid, inclusive and rigorous clinical trials are essential to ensure that new treatments are used wisely — for the right people, at the right time, and for the greatest benefit to society. In doing so, they may help humanity avoid the next great infectious disease catastrophe.
