Climate targets imply a dramatic transformation of the global energy system, yet fossil fuels are likely to remain part of it for decades. Professor Myles Allen CBE FRS, Professor of Geosystem Science at the University of Oxford, explores what this apparent contradiction means for climate policy and the future of oil and gas, including the contested UK developments at Jackdaw and Rosebank. Drawing on his climate research and his new perspective as a Hagler Research Fellow in Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M, he asks what a credible path to net zero looks like if fossil fuels are not, in fact, going away.

Following Myles’s presentation, he will be joined in conversation by Stephen Fisher, Professor of Political Sociology at Trinity College, whose research on attitudes to climate change includes the Peoples’ Climate Vote surveys for the United Nations Development Programme https://peoplesclimate.vote/

This talk tells an Oxford story, from the discovery and development of penicillin to the modern clinical evaluation of treatments for COVID-19 and other common viral infections. It explores how one of medicine’s great miracles also led to one of its great mistakes: the overuse of antimicrobials and the rise of resistance. Drawing on recent Oxford-led community-based clinical trials, Chris will argue that we must not repeat the same error with the new treatments for viral infections now coming to market at pace. Rapid, inclusive and rigorous clinical trials are essential to ensure that new treatments are used wisely — for the right people, at the right time, and for the greatest benefit to society. In doing so, they may help humanity avoid the next great infectious disease catastrophe.
