Admissions

We are looking for students who have a genuine interest in the intellectual underpinnings of religious ideas and in the social and historical context of world religions; and, for Philosophy and Theology, for students who are also intellectually curious about philosophical ideas.

Course Structure

Students in Theology and Religion will have the opportunity to learn a scriptural language (Biblical Hebrew, New Testament Greek, Arabic, Pali or Sanskrit) in their first year, alongside a wide choice of introductory papers. In the second and third years of the course, it’s possible to specialise in particular religions and in theology, ethics and history, and students take examination papers in their chosen subjects and also offer a thesis. Students in Philosophy and Theology study both subjects throughout their degree, with foundational work in the first year and then the option to specialise in the second and third years of the course.

No single thought goes unchallenged in my tutorials or essays. Your ability is persistently being stretched further and I really enjoy that.

Teaching Structure

Your College tutors are responsible for organising all your small-group teaching (tutorials and classes) and play a key role in overseeing your development throughout the course. The University Departments organise lectures and classes to supplement the tutorials, alongside some language classes (for Theology and Religion). Students are usually taught in tutorials of 2-3 students and will typically attend two tutorials a week throughout their course. The College library is well-stocked in both subjects.  The Bodleian Library (the main University Library) is right opposite Trinity, and the departmental libraries are within easy walking distance. The tutors set practice exams at the start of most terms so that students consolidate their learning and prepare for their university examinations. Our students achieve excellent results.

Career Prospects

The skills developed by students throughout their course are very attractive to employers, and recent graduates have gone on to careers in law, the arts, and marketing as well as further academic research.
