Profile

I am a Professor of Mathematics in the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford. I completed my PhD at Carleton University in Canada in 2011 and was a faculty member at the University of Houston before joining Oxford. My research is in operator algebras, with a particular focus on their connections with group theory, representation theory and dynamics.

Teaching

At Trinity, I teach the tutorials for some of the courses in pure mathematics for first years, and I teach the tutorials for Metric Spaces for second years. At departmental level, my teaching this year includes a part C course in Operator Algebras. I currently supervise two DPhil students who are working on problems related to representation theory, dynamics and operator algebras of discrete groups.

Research

My research concerns the analytic theory of discrete groups. In particular, I study connections between the dynamical properties of a group’s continuous and measurable actions, its representation theory, and the structure of the associated operator algebras. A central aim of my work is to understand what these associated objects reveal about the underlying group.
