Recognising Education Contributions in the North East

6 October 2022

Trinity College has helped celebrate students, teachers and school leaders from across the North East of England who have received national recognition for making stand-out contributions to their communities.

Outstanding students and school leaders were awarded prestigious Lord Glenamara Memorial prizes for success and contributions to their communities, including an Excellence in English award sponsored by Trinity College.

Introduced by the Department for Education in 2012, in memory of former Education Secretary and Newcastle MP Ted Short, the Lord Glenamara prize allows top talent from across the North East to take centre stage, recognising those achieving academic excellence whilst also making a profound difference to their communities. This is the final year of the awards which were first introduced by the Department for Education in 2012 and were extended in scope by Damian Hinds as part of Opportunity North East (ONE) programme in July 2019.

As well as the traditional academic excellence award the extended prizes recognises a North East pupil achieving vocational excellence as well as dedicating themselves to the service of others in their school and the wider community. Prizes also recognise inspiring teachers and other professionals who are helping to ensure that young people in the North East achieve their potential.

Richard Petty, Trinity's Senior Access Officer for the North-East of England, presented the prize for Excellence in English to the English team at Norham High School, saying: We are absolutely delighted that the English Department at Norham High School are such well-deserved winners of the Lord Glenamara Excellence in English Award. Reading is so integral to young learners’ progression and indeed the wider opportunities that they will be able to access later on in school and well beyond, and the efforts of the English Department are clearly having a significant impact on the reading and writing of all students at Norham High School, and thus on the local community in North Shields. This impact is meaningful, long-term and inspiring to the learners here and elsewhere – well done!'

Trinity College has sponsored the Excellence in English Award for the last three years as in recognition of the college’s link to schools in the North-East through its outreach work.
