Lecturer in Clinical Medicine

Neale Marlow

  • I am a Specialist Registrar in General Surgery on the Oxford Higher Surgical Training programme, with a special interest in medical education.
  • I graduated from UCL Medical School in 2016 with a first-class intercalated BSc (Hons) in Clinical Sciences and undertook Foundation Training in Chichester and London.
  • I completed Core Surgical Training in Oxford, obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2019, alongside an MSc in Surgical Science and Practice (Distinction) at Trinity College, Oxford.
  • My research focuses on improving safety and efficiency in surgery, having previously held the post of Research Assistant in the Patient Safety Academy, Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences (NDS).
  • Supported by an enthusiastic team of Clinical Specialist Advisors, I organise and provide teaching for Trinity’s clinical students and have been an NDS Surgical Tutor since 2018.
  • Outside of clinical, research and teaching commitments, I can usually be found up a mountain, on a bike or exploring the pubs of Oxford.

Teaching

As Lecturer in Clinical Medicine, I oversee clinical training provided by the college, maintain our distinguished portfolio of Clinical Specialist Advisors and teach the surgical half of the undergraduate curriculum. I have delivered educational programmes for national, regional and local bodies including the General Medical Council, the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch and the Royal College of Surgeons. In 2020, I was honoured to receive the ‘Surgical Tutor of the Year’ award, as voted for by medical students at the University of Oxford.

Research

My primary research interests focus on cultivating safety and efficiency in surgery. Through studying teamwork, human factors, quality improvement science and systems analysis, I hope to design and evaluate interventions to improve outcomes for surgical patients, particularly those receiving emergency care. In pursuit of this, I have published in fields ranging from major trauma to machine learning and on surgery in the COVID-19 era.
