Clinical Specialist Advisor - Gastroenterology

Michael FitzPatrick

  • I’m a gastroenterologist with a research interest in GI immunology and coeliac disease.
  • In my teaching, I enjoy linking clinical medicine to the underlying science, and teaching complexities of decision-making.
  • My particular research interest is in tissue-resident memory T cells in the gut.

Profile

I am a gastroenterologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital and clinical lecturer in the Nuffield Department of Medicine. I first trained in Zoology in Cambridge, defected to Medicine and studied and trained in London for 8 years, before moving to Oxford for my gastroenterology training. I completed a DPhil studying T cell biology in the gut in the contest of coeliac disease and intestinal transplantation.

Teaching

I teach clinical medicine and gastroenterology for Trinity medical students. I also teach GI anatomy and physiology for the graduate medicine programme, and provide regular teaching to medical students in the gastroenterology department.

Research

I am interested in gut immunology, tissue-resident memory T cell behaviour, and innate-like T cells. In particular, I am interested in coeliac disease, and in intestinal transplantation.
