Profile

I have been a Judge and was the President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism), as well as a Judge of the Appeals Chambers of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda ICTR). Since my election to the ICTY in March 2001, I served a total of four terms as President of the ICTY and three terms as President of the Mechanism.

I am a leading scholar of international humanitarian law, human rights and international criminal law. I have authored a dozen books on international law and along with more than a hundred articles. I am proud that these include some of the books and articles that helped build the legal foundations for International Criminal Tribunals. My most recent book is Standing Up for Justice: the Challenges of Trying Atrocity Crimes (OUP 2021).

I am a member of the Institute of International Law and of the Council on Foreign Relations, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the recipient of awards and honours, including Officer of the French Legion of Honour, Grand Officer of the French National Order of Merit as well as Officer of the Order of Merit of Poland and Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (the UK).

I am a past Honorary President of the American Society of International Law and past Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of International Law, as well as Charles L. Denison Professor of Law Emeritus at NYU School of Law. I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and special adviser on international humanitarian law of the international criminal court. In addition to my Honorary Fellowship at Trinity I am a Visiting Fellow of All Souls College and of Mansfield College, a Visiting Professor of Law at Oxford University and an Academic Associate of the Bonavero Human Rights Institute at Oxford.
