Academic Support Tutor in Mathematics and Physical Sciences

Andrew Browne

  • My publication record is probably the most disjointed you will see. I love getting involved in many areas of statistics, and working with collaborators who need support from a statistician.
  • I love teaching at Oxford, especially compared to previous jobs, as you can really see the impact you are making on individual students.
  • Currently, I am working on a number of systematic reviews and meta-analyses with medical students and clinicians, looking at compartment syndrome, and also pre-eclampsia

Profile

As well as at Trinity, I work in the Nuffield Department of Population Health as a lecturer, having previously worked in the Maths Learning Centre at De Montfort University, and a Teaching Associate in Statistics at the University of Strathclyde. I always am inspired by the diverse applications of statistics, from health, psychology, and even in law.

Teaching

In Trinity, I am the college’s academic support tutor in maths and sciences. I am available to any student at any level of study, and my role is applicable to all scientific subjects, as well as people in joint degrees and humanities degrees who may encounter quantitative methods and other scientific content in their course. I can also provide study skills support relevant to all disciplines.

I also teach on the MSc in Global Health Science and Epidemiology, as a lecturer in statistics and epidemiology, and as a tutor in statistics, as well as teaching on the CDT in Health Data Science.

I also supervise three DPhil students, covering diverse research areas including the association between body composition and diabetes, HIV trajectories, and associations between vascular-metabolic markers and dementia.

Research

Most of my research is collaborative alongside medical students and practicing clinicians, providing statistical support and guidance, as well as conducting analyses for their papers. Recently, I have contributed to quantitative syntheses in multiple meta-analyses, contributed to variable weighting schemes in a model for timing of pulmonary valve replacement, and worked with biologists and geneticists to help analyse their data on trait heritability.
