Professorial Title for Felix Hofmann

3 September 2024

Congratulations to Trinity Engineering Lecturer Felix Hofmann, who has been awarded the title of Professor of Engineering Science in the University’s Recognition of Distinction awards for 2024. The criteria for the conferment of the title of full professor include research, teaching and good citizenship.

Professor Hofmann teaches the Mechanics and Materials parts of the Engineering Science course and supervises postgraduates in the Department of Engineering Science. Professor Hofmann’s research group focuses on atomic scale defects are central to the mechanical, physical and failure properties of almost all structural alloys. His research works on characterising these defects and understanding the dramatic changes to material behaviour they may cause, using a wide range of experimental techniques, from X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy to nano-indentation and micro-mechanics.

Professor Hofmann’s recent research has showed how a new X-ray microscopy technique can examine nano-scale defects that can lead to material degradation in fusion reactors. He also recently led a team working with US partners at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developing materials for next-generation nuclear fission reactors thanks to a major EPSRC grant.
