Newman Society Lecture on Newman’s Canonisation

2 March 2026

On 13 February 2026, Trinity was delighted to host the Newman Society for a lecture on St John Henry Newman’s canonisation and his recent declaration as a Doctor of the Church. Held at Newman’s own college, the event provided a particularly fitting setting in which to reflect on his enduring theological and intellectual legacy.

The lecture explored the significance of Newman’s canonisation in 2019 and the process by which, in November 2025, he was declared a Doctor of the Church, a rare honour recognising the lasting importance of his writings and thought for the universal Church. The evening concluded with a lively Q&A session, and we are grateful to Trinity’s Conferences Team for their support in ensuring the event ran smoothly.

As a mark of appreciation for Trinity’s hospitality, and in recognition of the College’s historic role in Newman’s life and in the process leading to his recognition as a Doctor of the Church, the Newman Society has presented the College with a copy of the Positio. This substantial volume forms a central part of the formal process by which a saint is declared a Doctor of the Church. It includes a comprehensive summary of Newman’s works, alongside letters of support from institutions and individuals, among them a letter from a former President of Trinity.

The Positio was brought to the lecture by Fr George and could be seen on the lectern during the event. Privately and very limited in its publication, this copy is believed to be the only one currently in Oxford.

Trinity is grateful to the Newman Society for this generous gift and for organising such a thoughtful and well-attended event celebrating one of its most distinguished former members.
