Dr Katherine Backler Publishes First Book

6 March 2026

Timed to coincide with International Women’s Day (8 March), we are pleased to celebrate the publication of Dr Katherine Backlers first book, Athena’s Sisters: Reclaiming the Women of Classical Athens, published by Cambridge University Press in February. The book was completed during her time at Trinity.

Katherine was the College’s inaugural Career Development Fellow in Ancient History from 2022 to 2025. Following her time at Trinity, Katherine has taken up a permanent Lectureship in Ancient History at the University of Leeds, where she began in January.

Athena’s Sisters sheds new light on the lives and experiences of women in Classical Athens, recovering voices and stories often overlooked in traditional accounts of the ancient world. The publication marks a significant contribution to the field of Ancient History and to the ongoing reassessment of women’s roles in antiquity.

The book is available through Cambridge University Press and major booksellers. Readers purchasing directly from CUP can receive a 20% discount using the code ATSI2026.

Cambridge University Press is currently featuring the book in a dedicated window display, and it has also been highlighted in promotional videos

Reflecting on her time at Trinity, Katherine described her three years at the College as “such a happy time,” expressing particular gratitude to her colleagues for their support and kindness.

We warmly congratulate Katherine on both her appointment and her first monograph, and we look forward to following her continued success
