Alan Hollinghurst to Give Richard Hillary Lecture

3 February 2022

The author Alan Hollinghurst will be delivering the Richard Hillary Lecture at Trinity College this year on 17 February, in the auditorium of the College's recently-completed Levine Building.

Alan Hollinghurst was born in 1954, and read English at Magdalen College, Oxford.  He is the author of six novels, including The Swimming-Pool Library (1988), The Line of Beauty, which won the 2004 Man Booker Prize, The Stranger's Child (2011) and The Sparsholt Affair (2017).  He lives in London.

The Richard Hillary Memorial Lecture remembers Richard Hillary, the author of The Last Enemy, who was an Old Member of Trinity. Hillary was a Battle of Britain pilot; shot down and terribly burnt, he was an early patient of the pioneering plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe and was then killed after he resumed flying. His book, a classic of its genre, has never been out of print. Recent lecturers have included Philip Pullman, Howard Jacobson, Andrew Motion, Carol Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage and Tom Stoppard.
