Professor Simon Armitage, poet and professor of poetry at the University of Sheffield, has given the 2015 Richard Hillary Memorial Lecture to a capacity audience, speaking on the subject ‘Putting Poetry in its Place’.
The Richard Hillary Memorial Lecture remembers Richard Hillary, the author of The Last Enemy, who was an Old Member of Trinity. Hillary was a Battle of Britain pilot; shot down and terribly burnt, he was an early patient of the pioneering plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe and was then killed after he resumed flying. His book, a classic of its genre, has never been out of print. Recent lecturers have included Philip Pullman, Howard Jacobson, Andrew Motion, Carol Ann Duffy and Tom Stoppard.
Update: the text of the lecture is now available as a PDF document to download.
