Sir Charles Gray, 1942 – 2022

7 March 2022

Trinity College is greatly saddened by the death of Sir Charles Gray, Honorary Fellow and former High Court Judge. He died peacefully on 3 March.

Sir Charles read PPE at Trinity, graduating in 1964. He was called to the bar by Lincoln's Inn and began his practise in 1967; he took silk in 1984 and was elected a bencher in 1993, retiring in 2008. As a high court judge from 1998 he specialised in intellectual property, copyright, privacy and defamation cases, presiding over the trial of David Irving's libel lawsuit against Professor Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin Books over claims that Irving was a Holocaust denier. He also served as adjudicator in lawsuits against News Group Newspapers brought by people whose phones were hacked by the group.

The college extends its deepest sympathy to Sir Charles’s widow and family; the college flag will fly at half-mast in his honour.
