Arch of Triumph in Trafalgar Square

Trinity Old Member Roger Michel (1984) is behind the project to create a replica of Palmyra’s Arch of Triumph in Trafalgar Square, which was unveiled on 19 April. He has been interviewed for several press articles, including a report in the Telegraph Magazine.

The arch was unveiled by Boris Johnson, Mayor of London and will remain in the square for three days before moving to other locations around the world.

Roger Michel is founder and executive director of the Institute for Digital Archaeology (IDA), which is using state-of-the-art 3D technology to create the scale reproduction of the 2,000 year old Triumphal Arch, the original having been destroyed by ‘Islamic State’ last year. Of the unveiling he said, ‘It is extraordinary to have a vision about something and see it come together in such a palpable way’.

The Oxford-based IDA is creating permanent 3-D records of objects and sites, including those which may not have been documented, or only in a less comprehensive way, while also creating a clear provenance for objects which may be looted.
