The 2016 Richard Hillary Memorial Lecture was given by David Hare on Thursday 3 March.
Sir David, playwright, screenwriter, and theatre and film director, spoke on ‘Putting the clock back: a playwright’s view of dismal conservatism’. The lecture took place at the new Blavatnik School of Government. The text of the lecture is now available, follow the link below.
The Richard Hillary Memorial Lecture remembers Richard Hillary, the author of The Last Enemy, who was an Old Member of Trinity. Hillary was a Battle of Britain pilot; shot down and terribly burnt, he was an early patient of the pioneering plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe and was then killed after he resumed flying. His book, a classic of its genre, has never been out of print. Recent lecturers have included Philip Pullman, Howard Jacobson, Andrew Motion, Carol Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage (currently Oxford’s Professor of Poetry) and Tom Stoppard.
