 Undergraduate Grants

 

Academic Grants

Undergraduate Academic Grants are made to undergraduates to assist expenditure on projects which are of academic interest and likely to help their academic work. The total amount per student is currently £400 over the length of the undergraduate course.

Applications are made by filling in the General Grant Form (available on the Trinity website) by Wednesday of 3rd Week of each term. You will then be emailed by the Academic Administrator, confirming receipt. All forms require the support of the applicant’s tutor (supervisor, in the case of graduates) - these will be submitted to him/her by the Academic Administrator on your behalf.

If successful, candidates will receive a cheque for their expenses by the end of the term.

 

Grants for courses taken at the Language Teaching Centre 

If a course at the Language Teaching Centre directly relates to an undergraduate's academic course of  study, on the recommendation of the subject tutor the Senior Tutor will authorise payment of the full course fees by the college.

If undergraduates wish to follow a course at the Language Teaching Centre which is not directly related to their academic course of study,  they may apply to Grants Committee for a grant towards half the fees. Please note that such a grant must fall within the student's maximum entitlement for any academic grants. 

 

Vacation Grants

Vacation grants are available for home and international undergraduates who have obtained permission to stay up in the vacation to sit a University examination, or to do work in Oxford which requires the use of University or College facilities. The money available for these grants (which is allocated to the College via the University) is limited and so all claims are subject to the maximum periods stipulated. The application form may be downloaded from the College website (http://www.trinity.ox.ac.uk/info). All forms require a tutor’s recommendation and must be returned to the Tutorial Administrator, Isabel Lough, by Friday of 5th week of term.

Candidates for First Public Examinations in 9th Week of Hilary and Trinity Terms will be given a vacation grant at the standard daily rate for the period up to and including the night of their last examination  the Vacation Grant form MUST still be completed. The appropriate amount will be credited to battels. (See also Vacation Residence: you need to apply separately to the Accommodation Manager to keep your room!) 

 

Book Grants 

Book Grants of up to £50 per annum are available to all undergraduates on a ‘matched’ basis, i.e. students must produce receipts totalling £100 to be eligible to receive the maximum amount of £50 from the College. Application forms are available from the Bursary, and must be approved by a tutor.

 

Britton Instrumental Bursaries

Britton Instrumental Bursaries are offered to encourage good instrumentalists to foster and participate in the musical life of the College. Normally two (renewable) Bursaries are awarded each year. Application forms are sent to all Junior Members during their first Hilary Term.

 

Britton Travelling Bursaries

Britton Travelling Bursaries, normally of value not exceeding £150, are available to members who wish to travel for cultural purposes in or outside the UK. Preference will be given to objectives related to the applicant’s academic studies. These awards are made from a gathered field at the meeting of the Grants Committee in Hilary Term. Please use the same application form as for Academic Grants above.

 

Academic Prizes

A range of awards is available once students are studying at Trinity, including instrumental awards, Academic Prizes, College Prizes, Exhibitions and Scholarships awarded on the basis of academic merit during the course.

Academic Prizes of £40 may be awarded to undergraduates or postgraduates on the recommendation of the College Tutors, or the Tutor for Graduates with the support of the student's supervisor. Normally not more than one prize (exceptionally, two prizes) will be awarded to any student in one academic year. 

 

Extracurricular Activities

There is a limited fund available for extracurricular activities such as sport, music etc. Any reasoned application, with costings can be submitted to the Domestic Bursar (john.keeling@trinity.ox.ac.uk).

 

The Lingen Fund

Some funds are available for students studying Classics to go abroad to research. Students who are eligible should discuss their application with the Fellow and Tutor in Classics, Dr Gail Trimble.

 

Modern Languages- Year Abroad Fund

Students spending a year abroad can apply to the Modern Languages tutors for a small grant to help with the expenses involved by attendance at a language course abroad.

 

Graduate Grants
 

 

Academic Grants

Graduate Academic Grants are made to graduate students to assist expenditure on projects which are of academic interest and likely to help their academic work, and to assist with the costs of conferences and research expenses.

The total amounts per student per course are: up to £600 (Clinical Grant) and up to £600 for an elective/travel grant for Clinical Medical students; up to £450 for courses leading to a doctorate; £400 for a two-year MSc, MPhil or MLitt; £250 for a one-year MSc, MSt, MJuris, BCL, MBA, Diploma or PGCE.

Applications are made by filling in the General Grant Form (available on the Trinity website here by Wednesday of 3rd Week of each term. You will then be emailed by the Admissions and Grants Officer, confirming receipt. All forms require the support of the applicant’s tutor (supervisor, in the case of graduates)- these will be submitted to him/her by the Admissions and Grants Officer on your behalf.

Grants for courses taken at the Language Teaching Centre 

If a course at the Language Teaching Centre directly relates to a postgraduate's academic course of  study, on the recommendation of the supervisor the Senior Tutor will authorise payment of half the course fees by the college. (Graduates are advised to apply to their department or faculty for the funding of the other half of the fees.) Please note that such a grant must fall within the maximum entitlement of the graduate for any academic grants.

Graduate Scholarships (current students) 

Graduate Scholarships of £200 p.a. are awarded on an annual basis, limited to a maximum of six a year. Selection is made by the Governing Body at its October meeting from a list of recommendations put forward by the Tutor for Graduates, on the basis of reports from supervisors of all graduate students who are in fee-paying status. The Scholarships are normally awarded to  graduate students entering the third year of a doctorate (exceptionally, graduates entering the second year of a doctorate may be considered), and confer the right to one free dinner on High Table per week during term-time.

 

Book Grants

All graduate students in residence and liable for University and College fees are entitled to a book grant of £50 in total during their course to help with the purchase of books essential to their research. The application form may be downloaded from the College WebPage(http://www.trinity.ox.ac.uk/info). It must be supported by the applicant’s supervisor. In both cases, if approved, the amount claimed will be credited to battels.

J H Britton Travelling Bursaries, of value not exceeding £150, are available to members who wish to travel for cultural purposes in or outside the UK. Scholarships- Undergraduate

This page lists the major scholarships Trinity offers for undergraduate students. (For details of bursaries and hardship funding, please see the separate page dedicated to these.)

 

J H McKeown Scholarship 

Trinity will next be offering the Mrs J H McKeown Scholarship (value £18,000 p.a) for an overseas student offered a place to read for an undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford, preferably in one of the sciences, for entry in October 2016.

Further information is obtainable from the Academic Administrator. Candidates are required first to be offered a place at Oxford through UCAS. The scholarship will then be awarded, on academic merit, to a candidate who has been successful in the normal admissions process.

 

Jardine Scholarship

Trinity College is a designated college for the Jardine Scholarship, awarded annually by the Jardine Foundation to successful candidates from the Asia-Pacific area, and conditional on certain criteria. Further information is available at www.jardine-foundation.org.

 

Sarah and Nadine Pole Scholarship

The Sarah and Nadine Pole Scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student working in a field related to the search for a cure for cancer. The total awarded is £1500. The scholarship is advertised in Trinity Term each year by the Academic Administrator.

 

Whitehead Travelling Studentship

The James and George Whitehead Travelling Studentship is intended to enable those who otherwise would not have the means or opportunity to travel to visit Commonwealth and other countries. It is open to members of Trinity College of UK nationality who have just taken, or who by June will be qualified to take, an Honours degree. Students reading four-year degrees are eligible to apply in their fourth year. Under the terms of the bequest, the Studentship is intended for those who are contemplating a business or commercial career in the United Kingdom, such as that of manufacturer, banker, accountant, engineer, financier or broker (not, for instance, the church, medicine, education, law or journalism).

The student elected is required to leave Great Britain within three months of his or her election, and will "be furnished with such introductions and assistance as the College may be able to give. Candidates must be of suitable academic standing and must intend to use the award for an approved purpose." Candidates are required to submit an outline of their plans, including their proposed itinerary, estimated costs, what benefits they expect to derive and which business they intend to pursue. The scholarship is advertised in Hilary Term each year by the Academic Administrator.

 

Scholarships- Graduate

There is no application form for the College's named scholarships. Initial selection is made in consultation with the relevant faculty or department, which submits a shortlist of candidates for final selection by the College. It is helpful if you indicate interest in these awards on the University Application form.

   

Environmental Studies

Two Birkett Scholarships in Environmental Studies, value £7,000 each, will be available for 2013 entry. Candidates are nominated to the College by the Department upon acceptance for the one-year MSc course in Environmental Change and Management.

 

History

The  John Cooper Scholarship will be offered for a Home graduate student in History at Trinity College who is commencing studies for a Masters degree (MSt or MPhil) in October 2013. The scholarship of £10,000 will be combined with funding from the History Faculty to offer the recipient a full award at AHRC level for fees and maintenance for one year (MSt) or two years (MPhil), as appropriate.  Candidates for the scholarship will be nominated to the College by the Faculty of History after their acceptance on a Masters course.

 

History of Art  

The  Oxford Cecil Lubbock Memorial Scholarship is open to any student from the British Commonwealth (including the UK) commencing a DPhil in History of Art in October 2013. The scholarship will pay (home / EU) fees and the equivalent of a full AHRC maintenance award for three years, subject to satisfactory progress. Candidates eligible for the scholarship will be nominated to the College by the Department of History of Art after their acceptance on the DPhil  course.

 

 

Law

The Michael and Judith Beloff Scholarship (value £7,000 p.a.) is open to postgraduate students intending to study for a BCL degree, with a preference to someone intending to practise at the Bar of England and Wales. For 2013 entry, the college scholarship will be combined with an award from the Law Faculty, to offer the recipient a full award at AHRC level for fees and maintenance.Candidates for the scholarship will be nominated to the College by the Faculty of Law after their acceptance on the BCL course.

  

 

MBA

The Saïd MBA Scholarships  pay the College fee. There are two awards available for the MBA each year. Candidates are nominated to the College upon acceptance for the MBA by the Said Business School.

 

Materials/Engineering

The Kandiah Thiruvukkarsau Graduate Scholarship of £500 is awarded annually to an academically able, financially deserving graduate student on course in Materials or Engineering at Trinity College.

 

Theology

Austin Farrer Memorial Scholarship in Theology or Philosophical Theology (value £2,500), open to an applicant to Trinity for a Masters course in Theology or Philosophical Theology. Applicants must have graduated in Theology or Philosophy and Theology at Oxford University. The scholarship will be available for October 2013 entry. 

George and Apphia Woodruffe Scholarship in Theology (value £10,000), open to an applicant to Trinity for a one-year Masters course in Theology for October 2013 entry.

 

Any Arts and Humanities or Social Sciences subject: Professor John Mitchell Scholarships

 (value £10,00 per sholarship - or exceptionally a scholarship may be awarded for full home / EU fees plus a maintenance award at AHRC level ).  To be eligible for the  Professor John Mitchell Scholarship, applicants must be in the final year of their undergraduate course at Trinity College Oxford in 2012-13, and must hold an academic Exhibition or Scholarship. Applicants should be applying to study a Masters course (of one-year or two-years duration) in either arts and humanities or social sciences. One or two Professor John Mitchell Scholarships will be available for October 2013 entry. 

 

Any subject: Jeffrey Abbott Scholarship

One Jeffrey Abbott Scholarship, value £7,500 p.a., is open to any graduate accepted for a graduate place at Trinity for October 2013, and who has strong ability in rugby and an interest in playing at University level.
