A Message from the President
Hello and welcome to the website of Trinity College Boat Club, Oxford.
Rowing is one of the most famous sports at Oxford, with the annual Oxford Cambridge Boat Race on the Thames in London being a highlight of any sporting calendar. Trinity College Boat Club aims to promote rowing within Trinity College, both competitively and as a pastime. We cater for all standards of rowers – each year we train many novices who have never picked up an oar (“blade”) before, we have several people who have rowed at a high standard for many years at school and our membership currently includes three international oarsmen, one of who in 2007 represented his country at the World Championships.
Our aim is to make Rowing both a fun and competitive sport for our members - we enter crews for the main rowing races within Oxford University, in particular Summer Eights during Trinity Term and Torpids during Hilary Term; and we enter several external regattas including the prestigious Head of the River Races in London and Henley Royal Regatta. However, we also cater for those less competitive who simply want to have fun messing about on the river!
We are a very successful Boat Club - in 2009 we were the best undergraduate Boat Club in terms of net bumps in the intercollegiate Torpids regatta, and our Men's 2nd and 3rd VIIIs earned honours not seen together since 1981. For more information, see our “History” and “News” sections of the website.
However, the Boat Club extends beyond our water-based activities. We hope to generate a friendly, welcoming community and to this extent we run many social events, including several annual Black Tie dinners, Cocktail events, Boat Club Curries and, obviously, the infamous “Crew Dates”!
We are not unaware that our members need to prioritise their academic studies. We find our rowers generate an excellent ability to manage their time that allows them to achieve a good balance between academic commitments, sport and their social lives. It is noteworthy that 7 of last year's Men's 1st VIII have either graduated with first class degrees or have earned distinctions which have resulted in them being awarded academic scholarships.
If you are interested in becoming involved in rowing at Trinity, or would like any more information, please do not hesitate to contact me at president.boatclub@trinity.ox.ac.uk.
Best Wishes,
Matthew Mair
